An anthology of short stories that are a modern interpretation of Dante Alighieri’s Purgatorio. It is part of a trilogy titled The Gnostic Divine Comedy.

The protagonist is the reader in Atonement. Each story is about the life of a different person striving for personal betterment. Many, though not all, of their lifestyles are based on religion, while others revolve around endeavors to improve the lives of others without a religious attachment.

The lives witnessed are from various cultures and social circumstances. The experiences encountered are intended to demonstrate how people toil to reach a higher place. Atonement prepares the reader for the next phase of the journey in the trilogy titled The Astral Plane. The stories often draw inspiration from the author’s own life experience. Others are derived from the author’s research on a subject or event that relates to the overall theme. Some themes parallel the original Purgatorio. There are also references to modern pop culture and contemporary social themes. The book is not religious, nor is it biased towards any religion or spiritual philosophy, but it does showcase many. It also contains elements of dark humor.
